Unblocking GPTBot won’t get your products into ChatGPT: what each OpenAI crawler actually does

If you have searched for why your store does not show up in ChatGPT, you have almost certainly been told the fix is to edit your robots.txt and let GPTBot crawl your site. I checked that advice against OpenAI’s own documentation, and it is wrong on two separate counts. Allowing GPTBot does not put your products into ChatGPT’s shopping results, because those results run on a product feed you submit, not on anything a crawler reads off your pages. And if your goal is the other thing, being mentioned in ChatGPT’s written answers, GPTBot is still the wrong bot: the crawler that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search is a different one called OAI-SearchBot. GPTBot is the training crawler. So the single most repeated fix in this space points merchants at a setting that moves neither outcome.

The reason the advice sounds right is that it collapses two different questions into one. “Show up in ChatGPT” can mean two things, and they run through two separate pipes.

Two outcomes, two separate pipes

The first outcome is getting your products recommended: the shopping cards a shopper sees when they ask ChatGPT to find them something to buy. The second is getting your pages cited: the links and mentions inside ChatGPT’s written prose when it answers a question. These are produced by completely different machinery, and the robots.txt advice only has any bearing on the second one.

Two separate pipes.Get your PRODUCTS recommendedthe shopping cardsA product feed you submitCSV or JSON, daily snapshotsNo crawler reads this. robots.txt is irrelevant.Get your PAGES citedprose answers and ChatGPT searchOAI-SearchBot crawls your pagesallowing it makes you eligibleThis is the door, not the ranking.GPTBot is the training crawler. It is part of neither lane.

Your products come from a feed, not a crawl

OpenAI’s commerce documentation is explicit about how product data enters ChatGPT. Its key-concepts page says: “Merchants provide a secure, regularly refreshed feed (CSV or JSON) containing key details such as identifiers, descriptions, pricing, inventory, media, and fulfillment options.” The onboarding step it describes is “sending an initial sample feed for validation, and daily snapshots.” There is no crawler in that description at all. The product surface is fed, not scraped.

That single fact settles the most common version of the question. If you want your products to appear in ChatGPT’s shopping experience, whether GPTBot can reach your site is beside the point. A store can allow every OpenAI bot and still have zero products in ChatGPT because it never submitted a feed. A store can block GPTBot entirely and still have every product listed because its feed is clean. On Shopify the feed is the Shopify Catalog; on other platforms it is an OpenAI or Google Merchant feed. The lever is the feed, and the robots.txt edit does not touch it.

Ranking inside that surface is also not a crawler question. OpenAI’s docs attribute ranking to product-quality signals: recommended attributes such as rich media, reviews, and performance signals, which it says improve ranking, relevance, and user trust. Those live in your feed and on your product pages, not in a robots.txt allow-list.

The four bots, and which one governs citations

The second outcome, being named or linked inside ChatGPT’s written answers, is the only place a crawler enters the story. But here the advice names the wrong crawler. OpenAI documents four distinct bots, each with its own robots.txt token and its own job.

The four OpenAI bots, per OpenAI’s docsBOTWHAT IT DOESMATTERS FOROAI-SearchBotSurfaces sites in ChatGPT searchCitationsGPTBotCrawls content for model trainingNot a leverChatGPT-UserFetches a page when a user asksUser asks onlyOAI-AdsBotValidates pages submitted as adsAds onlyThe one that surfaces you in ChatGPT search is OAI-SearchBot, not GPTBot.

In OpenAI’s words, GPTBot is “used to crawl content that may be used in training our generative AI foundation models.” OAI-SearchBot is “used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT’s search features.” ChatGPT-User is “used for certain user actions in ChatGPT and Custom GPTs,” visiting a page when a person asks ChatGPT to read it. OAI-AdsBot is “used to validate the safety of web pages submitted as ads on ChatGPT.”

Read those side by side and the fix falls apart. The bot that decides whether you can appear as a cited source in ChatGPT search is OAI-SearchBot. GPTBot only decides whether your content may be used to train a future model. They are controlled independently: you can allow OAI-SearchBot and disallow GPTBot in the same robots.txt. A merchant who “unblocks GPTBot to show up in ChatGPT” has changed a training-data setting and left the search-visibility setting exactly where it was.

What to actually do

Sort your goal first, then act on the right pipe. If you want your products in ChatGPT’s shopping results, get a clean product feed submitted and keep it matching your live pages; no robots.txt edit is part of that job. If you want your pages eligible to be cited in ChatGPT’s answers, make sure OAI-SearchBot is allowed in robots.txt. Allowing it is the door, not the ranking: it makes you eligible to appear, it does not decide whether you do.

GPTBot is a genuine decision, just not this one. Allowing or blocking it is a choice about whether your content feeds model training, and you can make it on those terms without worrying that it changes your shopping visibility, because it does not. Any guide that tells you unblocking GPTBot is how you get into ChatGPT is selling you a robots.txt edit as a substitute for the two things that actually move the needle: a real feed, and the right bot allowed for citations.
